Call it what you want, but they all mean the same thing.  Your getting a call at dinner from a machine.

There is a bit of good news in 2009 for those that get these calls as well as for those that send them.  Of course this is all a matter of perspective. There are two stages to the change: In December 2008, robocalls were required to include an automated key-press or voice-activated opt-out. Beginning September 2009, telemarketers won’t be able to send out any robocalls without “the prior express written agreement of the recipient to receive such calls.”

The benefit here for companies is that they may now broadcast without repercussion to those that accept to receive the calls (sans Political Messages of course). I believe this is how it should be, as dialing white page data is merely war dialing. The FTC amended this telemarketing rule after reviewing a slew of complaints from the public.

Beginning in December, all companies sending out automated calls must give the party an option to opt out of receiving anymore calls. Expansion of this enforcement starts in September of 2009 and will limit automated calls all together in any form.

For the most part, a company will be required to have a signed document from the customer/individual stating they authorized automated calls to their registered number. It seems a digital signature is also valid, but the lack of knowledge on how to obtain digital signatures by the general public could make this feature irrelevant.

How this will affect charities such as religious organizations remains to be seen. Currently they are exempt from this types of automated calls and it can be assumed they will remain to be exempt.

You run into some gray areas when you are an institution that is exempt from the ban, but make solicitations in your calls.

As with the current Do not Call program, companies may place calls delivering prerecorded messages to consumers with whom they have an established business relationship for one year.

For the most part, the types of tasks you ask of your employees is a good use of your time and money.

There are just some things you DO NOT want to automate. As technology advances this may be an option, but for right now save your money.

There are however, a huge list of items that can be automated. Dare I say SHOULD be automated? If only someone out there knew how they COULD be automated, they WOULD be automated.

At the top of my list is the capture of name and address information from a phone call. There are quite a few companies out there that do this bit of wizardry, and wizardry it it is indeed.

The way it works is simple. You would pick up a phone and dial an 800 number (or these days it would be an 877 number since the 800zilla monster awoke and ate all the 800 TFN’s). The system behind the scenes would be looking up your Caller ID, and trying to match it up with a name and address. Now just to make sure it is correct, it will ask you for your first name and last name and then ask you to spell it. Provided your name is not like mine with about a hundred nouns spliced together one right after another that all sound the same (50% of all callers), the system will repeat it back to you and you will say “YES! This is me!” It will then proceed to verify the address it found by asking you for it and matching it up via Voice Recognition to what you tell it.

Simple enough?

Well not that simple. You see, there are a lot of gotchas in this solution. One of which is the expanded use of Caller ID blocking. How about a wrong Caller ID? How about a caller with an accent? Or like myself, a last name with a a lot of nouns and you can’t really tell the automated system “D” as in dog. A lot of these companies are throwing out capture rates of 85% – 90%. What that means is you are losing about 10% – 15% of your revenue out there on the table. If you are one of those individuals that uses $100 bills to light their cigars, I’m sure you can’t wait to get started.

Installing Wordpress

• The first link will help you get WordPress installed. Once installed, many of the features won’t work. This is most likely due to file permission errors. Enter the snarp article, which will get your permissions corrected.
